Carnival Darts
A good crowd turned up to support carnival darts at The Rose Inn on Thursday evening. It was good to see locals and holiday makers enjoying themselves and the whole evening had a friendly feel. The semi-finals were between Mike & Rita versus Spinky & Fiona with Mike & Rita going through to the final after a close match. The other semi-final was between Steve & Julie versus Geoff and Marion with Steve & Julie eventually taking the last place in the final. The final itself was closely contested with both couples suffering from “double trouble” before Steve & Julie Squires went on to win. Well done. Thanks to everyone for supporting the event where we raised £140 for Ventnor Carnival.
Changes at the Carnival Committee
The Ventnor Carnival Committee has lost one of its most active and committed members in Brenda Lawson who has resigned on health grounds. The Committee wish to record publicly its appreciation of Brenda for her work and support over many years. Brenda has become a personal friend to many on the Committee and each expressed their concern for her and pledged their support as she begins treatment.
Claire Critchinson has been appointed as Vice Chairman and Doug and Janet Nettleton have been put in charge of fund raising. All recognise they have a hard act to follow and will strive to reach the high standards set by Brenda.
Carnival Committee Annual General Meeting
The Ventnor Carnival Association met on Wednesday 19th November for its Annual General Meeting. Chairman Eddie Goodlet opened the proceedings with a minute’s silence in memory of Brenda Lawson who passed away on the day of this year’s main parade on 13th August 2008.
He thanked all the outgoing committee for the mammoth effort in not only staging the events in the teeth of bad weather but in expanding the range of carnival events. He acknowledged the help of other organisations around the town for their help and support. This year the carnival broke even financially – a great advance on the last few years. The meeting re-elected Eddie as Chairman for the coming year and the current incumbents were persuaded to remain as Secretary and Treasurer. Two new members joined the committee at the meeting but it was disappointing to see Doug and Janet Nettleton retire – their steadfast contribution in past years, especially on the production of the programme, will be greatly missed. The full list of committee members for 2009 are Eddie Goodlet, Claire Critchison (Vice Chairman), Stephanie Smith, Jane Goodlet, Andy Berry, Sue Goulding, Heather Janvrin, Eric Critchison, David Yates, George Harlow, Janice Whittle, Lindsey Thatcher, Andy Middleton, Steph Moorton and Jane Mansell. The President and Honorary Life President are Mayor Susan Scoccia and Mrs Dorcas Barnet respectively. The Trustees remain Mr Keith Fradgely, Mr Robbie Mew and Mr Robert Plumridge.
Work has already begun on the 2009 carnival and Eddie called for the committee and the town to make it one of the best.
Carnival - Annual General Meeting
Notice is hereby given that the Annual General Meeting of the Ventnor Carnival Association will be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 19th November 2008 at the Community Project in Albert Street, Ventnor. This meeting provides an ideal opportunity for those who may wish to give some of their time to help the Carnival either as Committee members or in any other role. After the formal business the Committee would be happy to chat about how a Carnival is run and what sort of help is needed. Please feel free to come along to see if helping with Carnival is something that might appeal to you.
